纯碱的用途很广，一般都是利用它的碱性。它可用于制造玻璃，如平板玻璃、瓶玻璃、光学玻璃和高级器皿；还可利用脂肪酸与纯碱的反应制肥皂；在硬水的软化、石油和油类的精制、冶金工业中脱除硫和磷、选矿、以及铜、铅、镍、锡、铀、铝等金属的制备、化学工业中制取钠盐、金属碳酸盐、漂白剂、填料、洗涤剂、催化剂及染料等均要用到它，在陶瓷工业中制取耐火材料和釉也要用到纯碱。
