1.可燃性液体。有吸湿性，对金属不腐蚀。与二元酸反应生成聚酯，与硝酸反应生成硝酸酯，与盐酸作用生成氯代醇。与稀硫酸在170℃加热转变成丙醛。用硝酸或铬酸氧化生成羟基乙酸、草酸、乙酸等。与醛反应生成缩醛。1,2-丙二醇脱水生成氧化丙烯或聚乙二醇。
2.毒性和刺激性都非常小，迄今尚未发现受害者。大鼠静脉注射和腹腔注射LD507000~8000mg/kg，经口LD502800mg/kg。但也有报道，当添加在食品和饮料中一次服用量过高时，有引起致命的假寐和肾脏障碍的危险。
3.存在于烟叶、烟气中。
